Kundara – History of the Place Name

There are different opinions regarding the origin of the place name Kundara. One such interpretation derives the name by dividing it into “Kunda + Ara” or “Kunda + Ara” and assigning meanings to the individual words.

The word “Kunda” is said to mean Durga, while “Ara” refers to a small temple or shrine. Since a Durga temple is located at Elampalloor, one view is that the area came to be known as Kundara, derived from Kundara, meaning a place associated with a Durga temple.

Another interpretation differs from this and derives the name from “Gundu + Ara.” The word “Gundu” means bullet or ammunition. According to this view, the region had underground storage chambers or vaults where ammunition was kept for the military requirements of certain kings. It is believed that the name Gundu + Ara gradually evolved into Kundara.

Kundara also has significance in the context of ancient trade routes. It is said that from around AD 800 onwards, spices and other commodities were brought from Tamil Nadu to the Kollam port and various intermediary trading centres for commercial purposes. These goods were transported by fastening loads or bundles on both sides of bullocks.

The traders required safe resting places and storage facilities to protect their merchandise from wild animals and robbers. In this context, the geographical location of Kundara and its connection with ancient trade routes are considered significant in understanding the historical development of the region.
